This type of Jewel fish are called Hemichromis bimaculatus out of 11 known species of cichlids, they can be distinguished with the small blue spots & 3 black spots on their body. Jewelfish can grow up to 6 inches & live for more than 5 years. Jewel cichlid prefer warmer water's & acidic water condition's as they are native to Africa & are found in African rivers & streams. Aquarium care for African Jewelfish -
- Tank Size - 30 Gallon or more for a pair & 40 gallon or more for more than a pair of fish

- pH range - 6.5 to 7.5, 6.8 is ideal for breeding

-Temperature Range - ( 72–82 °F or 22–28 °C) water change & 2 degree rise in water temperature triggers spawning in Jewel cichlid

-Tank Decor - Sand at the tank bottom is advised as Jewel fish Dig nest. Adding rocks in the tank creates hiding places. Driftwood keeps the water pH closer to neutral..

- Food- Jewelfish are Omnivores, you can feed both live & readily available fish food too jewel cichlids.

-Tank mates - I have included Jewel cichlids with similar size cichlids like marble cichlid, green terror cichlid, convict cichlid, yellow lab cichlid with no problems. However tank decoration plays an important role. bigger tank & more hiding places helps control aggression.

- Once Jewelfish pair-up its better to separate them from the rest as aggression is highest during this time. Jewel cichlids once they pair up start defending a spot in the tank together by chasing away all the other fish. Once they spawn the female lays the eggs on a rock or flat surface, eggs hatch in 2 to 4 days. Jewel fish take care of the fry.
