Convict Cichids are among the best parents who care for their new born fry. Its easy to breed convict cichlids, even easier to care for the fry as unlike most fish, convict cichlids take care of their fry until they spawn again & have another batch to attend. The male seems to patrol the aquarium looking for any other fish which can eat these fry; male convict cichlid would take on any larger fish & chase it away. The Female Convict Cichlid stays close to the fry, in the video you can see the female convict cichlid moving gravel to form a nest & delicately moving the fry into the nest. Convict cichlids use use their fins to fan the eggs to circulate water; they seem to do that even after the eggs hatch into fry. In the video are Baby Convict cichlid which are just 2 days old; along with its parents. There are approximately 150 to 200 convict cichlid fry. These baby fish seem to hang on to the clay pots you see in the aquarium. If they swim too far from the nest the convict cichlid parents gently move them close to the nest.
Once convict cichlid are born they absorb nutrients from their yolk sac for 2 days after which you can feed them micro pellets or crushed flakes.
Convict cichlids spawn very often & are called the rabbits of the fish world due to this reason, ensure you know where to re-home the fry in case you are breeding them.
